The Stuff
|
In his younger years Ed gained significant experience as a street fighter and later as a professional boxer. In September of 1957 he moved to Seattle, Washington. There, Ed joined the Seattle Judo Club where he met and became close friends with Jesse Glover. In 1959 at the Seafair festival in Seattle, they attended a Chinese performance where they saw a young Bruce Lee performing Gung Fu forms on stage. Jesse, who was coincidentally attending the same school as Bruce, introduced himself to Bruce and became his friend and first student. Not long after, Jesse introduced Ed to Bruce, and Ed became Bruce's second student. Years later, Ed would combine his boxing skills and street experience with the Gung Fu he learned mostly from Jesse to create his personal art called "The Stuff." Although the name may have been in jest, Ed's instruction was not. The Stuff consisted of structure, power, sensing, and a focus on ending the fight quickly. Ed catered his instruction to each student, working on specific techniques that would most benefit a particular student's physiology and skills. In addition to teaching martial arts, Ed was a close friend and a mentor to many. Ed Hart died on December 8th 1998. He is fondly remembered and greatly missed. |
